Print Making

Julie Chen : Flying Fish Press

Julie Chen is a bookmaker, printer, and designer. She established her press Flying Fish Press in 1987 when she was a graduate student in Book Art at Mills College in Oakland, California.

She has been publishing her work of bookmaking with letterpress in its unique and ambitious style. Most of the works published in the press are authored by Julie. She has also collaborated on artist’s book projects with other artists including Lois Morrison, Barbara Tetenbaum, and Clifton Meador.

Book of Hours

One of the signature styles of Julie’s work is the way she folds and also the variety of the shapes she uses.

I have had printmaking projects to make small simple books and that alone required great attention to detail and patience. I am amazed by such complex structure that she manages to bring to life. It is a small dream of mine to own one of her book someday.
